Learn something new

“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” ~ Christopher McCandless …

Life is filled with a plethora of wonderful things for us to learn. Yet in spite of this truth, there are even more things that we will never know–and this is a good thing, for so much what others try to impress upon us is really not of much use to us on a personal level, and often times completely useless to us as human beings. It is therefore to our benefit to seek out new adventures that inspire the individual within us, and broaden our horizons with new encounters and experiences.

Contrary to popular belief, broadening our horizons does not mean gathering more information, nor does it mean memorizing more facts and figures. What it does mean, however, is opening our hearts, our minds, and our eyes to the world around us. It means developing and fostering a deep awareness in life. It means involving ourselves in the lives of those we love–finding out what things our spouse, children, and loved ones enjoy doing and what things bring happiness into their lives. It means learning how we hurt or diminish the potentials of others, and then changing that around to help them. It means taking the time to learn more about our health and ways in which we can better take care of ourselves and others. It means knowing ourselves, working on good habits and avoiding the bad ones. It means changing and growing into something greater than we were yesterday.

The more things you love, the more your interests grow. The more your interests grow, the more happiness and joy you discover all around you. By broadening your horizons, you cannot help but begin to live your life to the fullest.

Take a moment today to learn about someone, or something, that you know very little about.

Questions to consider:

How can your involvement in life directly affect the joy and happiness you experience each day?

How many things might you be interested in if you learned something about them?

In what directions would you most like to broaden your horizons? Are you actively doing so now?

For further thought:

The good you find in others, is in you too.
The faults you find in others, are your faults as well.
After all, to recognize something you must know it.
The possibilities you see in others, are possible for you as well.
The beauty you see around you, is your beauty.
The world around you is a reflection, a mirror showing you the person you are.
To change your world, you must change yourself.
See the best in others, and you will be your best.
Give to others and you give to yourself.
Appreciate beauty, and you will be beautiful.
Admire creativity, and you will be creative.
Love, and you will be loved.
See to understand, and you will be understood.
Listen, and your voice will be heard.
Teach, and you will learn.
