Search For Your Own Ideals And Work Toward Reaching Them

“Life holds no promises as to what will come your way. You must search for your own ideals and work toward reaching them. Life makes no guarantees as to what you’ll have. It just gives you time to make choices and to take chances and to discover whatever secrets that might come your way. If you are willing to take the opportunities you are given and utilize the abilities you have, you will constantly fill your life with special moments and unforgettable times.” – Dena Dilaconi

“If you are willing to take the opportunities you are given and utilize the abilities you have…” In some ways, I think that we could whittle down the search for a happy, fulfilling life to these words. Life gives us a great deal of opportunity, but are we willing to accept it? Are we willing to use the abilities that we have to make our lives brighter and happier? Or do we back away from using them because we might then face the unknown or the unexpected?

True Humility Is Intelligent Self-Respect

“Wise people possess humility. They know that their small islands of knowledge are surrounded by a vast sea of the unknown.” – Harold C. Chase

As a child, I sometimes used to wonder what it would be like to have a giant chalkboard that covered the entire wall of the classroom. I would think to myself how fun it would be to write and draw on it, and how hard it would be to clean it. I want you to imagine now this same chalkboard, and let it represent all the knowledge that is available to be known by human beings. Now imagine putting the tiniest of marks somewhere on the board–anywhere at all. When compared to all the knowledge that is possible to know in the world, that tiny spot would be ginormous in comparison to how much I will ever know during my lifetime on this planet.

Hope Is Mother Of Success

“Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him or her the gift of miracles.” – Samuel Smiles

Hope. What a beautiful word in so many ways! Some people interpret the word in ways that make it sound like a weakness, but in the end hope is a great concept. It is hope that keeps us going in life–hope for a better tomorrow for us all, hope for an end to war, hope for true kinship and fair treatment of man.

Look Inside Yourself For Strength And Confidence

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.” – The Tao Te Ching.

Confidence breeds assurance, contentment breeds confidence, and acceptance breeds contentment–serenity is achieved by accepting who we are. Often times it seems a lonely walk when we believe in ourselves. When we are not looking for the approval and agreement of others, much of our interaction with them is taken away. After all, how much of our normal conversations are based on trying to convince others that we are right, or to convince them that they should approve of us because of something we think, a perspective that we share, or something that we have done?

Make The Best Out Of Everything That Comes Your Way

“Life is not always what one wants it to be, but to make the best of it, as it is, is the only way of being happy.” – Jennie Jerome Churchill

If my today were to be exactly how I would like it to be, it probably wouldn’t be much like the today I’m going to have. There would be much more free time in there, and there would be time for writing and reading and doing things that are more hobbies than work. A couple of the people who are in my life probably wouldn’t be in there, especially those who cause a great deal of strife and stress.

When Doing The Right Thing Is The “Hard Part”

The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it.” – H. Norman Schwarzkopf…

My experience tells me that what Schwarzkopf says is true–the right thing to do is inside of me, something that I know internally and instinctively. Knowing this, it should make it easier to make tough decisions when they face me. It often isn’t, though, especially when my decisions affect others in ways that they see as negative or hurtful.

Between Cleverness And Wisdom

“You can tell whether one is clever by his or her answers. You can tell whether one is wise by his or her questions.” – Naguib Mahfouz

I have noticed that many people tend to value cleverness over wisdom. I believe this probably has to do more with maturity and lack of understanding of the two, than with changes in society. To me, I see such a profound difference between the two: cleverness entertains me for a moment or two, while wisdom provides me with something important that bears with me for the rest of my life. Yet often times, people seem to value the laughter that results from their cleverness over the thoughts, knowledge, and understanding that could result from sharing their wisdom gained over the years.
