Develop Your Strength This Year

“We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…. not looking for flaws, but for potential.” – Ellen Goodman

Over the last decade, as I have exited formal education, I’ve noticed what I consider to be a major flaw in the approaches that most teachers take. They always seem to be trying to fix things in their students so that the students can “perform” well. Janet can’t read well, so let’s spend some extra time working on her reading, because reading is a “necessary” skill. And Peter is having a hard time with math, so let’s make Peter spend extra time on his math to bring him “up to speed.” Continue reading

Who Defines Who You Are?

“We must not allow other people’s limited perceptions to define us.” – Virginia Satir

It is hard to believe just how much time I have wasted worrying about how other people have seen me, what they have thought of me, what they have considered me to be, the value they have seen in me. I somehow grew up putting a great deal of value in other people’s perceptions of who I am and what I am worth, even when those people really have not known much about me at all. Continue reading

Here Comes The Latest ‘Bride’ In The World

This poem is dedicated to you all, lucky enough to make it (against all odds) to 2013!

I see you in the not distant future
Wearing clothes spun from gold,
Shining bright and blinding my fear
Hidden beneath your cloak,
I see simmering in the dark,
faint touches of the disappointments of
2012.

I am a ‘bride’, but not one so young
I know that I have seen you before
Given you my heart and danced at midnight,
In full glow of the music of your promises Continue reading

Goodbye 2012

“Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past, Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go” – Brooks Atkinson

To say Nigeria has had an Annus Horribilis is to state the obvious. It all kicked off on January 1 with the increase in the pump price of petrol and things simply unravelled and spiralled. We had protests, the terrible tragedy of the plane crash, economic crises, and corruption of scary proportions. Continue reading

Another Chance Called 2013

Every New Year offers an opportunity for nations, states, organizations and even families and individuals to begin afresh, to improve on what they have been doing the previous year. It is an opportunity to take a critical look at your activities in the past year and take stock to know if you are on the right track or not. Both the leaders and the led in any of the aforementioned settings have a role to play in charting a new course and implementing this new course to achieve better results than the previous year(s). Thank God 2012 Can Go!

“A new year can begin only because the old year ends.” – Madeleine L’Engle

To me, the most important part of this is the idea of us allowing the old year to end. If we really want to move into the new year in fresh and exciting ways, then we have to leave the old year behind–do not carry the excess baggage of yesterday around. What we did yesterday is now gone, and what we do today will soon be in the past. When tomorrow comes, live that day on its terms. Continue reading
