Be Steadfast

“Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger people! Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for power equal to your tasks.” ~ Phillips Brooks …

Phillip is not saying that we should pray for a difficult life–no one wants a difficult life, nor should they. Rather, here he is saying that tragedy is going to befall each of us; and when it does, we need to be able to confront it with the confidence and resolve that can only be found by weathering the many difficulties, and overcoming the many challenges, we are faced with. Life Is Love

“The problem lies not in the question, “What is the meaning of life?” The problem is not finding Love as the answer.” ~ Debbie Skelly …

“What is the meaning of life?” Although this question is one of the most thought on questions in the whole of human history, it still perplexes many of us today. Perhaps the problem for many of us is making a false assumption that this question has a simple answer such as “What is an apple?” Or maybe what we are really asking ourselves is “Why is there anything at all?” And when we start traveling down this path of reasoning… the only real answer is love. Spare Time

“There is time enough, but none to spare.” ~ Charles W. Chesnutt

I often feel that there are simply not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that I wish to accomplish. I have my work, tasks, chores… and then there are others who need my attention, such as my children. I have hobbies and recreational activities I enjoy, books to read, TV shows and movies to watch, and emails and correspondence to attend to, and at the end of the day, there always seems to be things I did not get around to doing. But this is not an issue of lack of time, for we all have the same amount of time given to us each day. Instead, it is a lack of prioritization–an improper appraisal on the value of the time available to us–that leads us to spend it unwisely. Continue reading

Our Desired Change

“If there is anything we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves.” ~ Carl Jung …

Becoming a parent has been one of the most important learning experiences of my life. As it turns out, many of the things I felt I needed to change in the lives of my children were actually things that were best addressed by making small and meaningful changes within myself. How they would act in public, their likes and dislikes, their fondness with getting dirty or making messes–these were a source of stress and frustration to me, but also, were perhaps a reflection of how well I functioned as a parent. And as I began to approach my own shortcomings, and make more positive changes in my life–the way I spoke, the tones I used, the habits and attitudes I embraced–I began to notice those changes also happening in my children’s lives. It Is In Us!

“Because gratification of a desire leads to the temporary stilling of the mind and the experience of the peaceful, joyful Self, it is no wonder that we get hooked on thinking that happiness comes from the satisfaction of desires. This is the meaning of the old adage, “Joy is not in things, it is in us.” ~ Joan Borysenko …

As Joan points out, because we experience a temporary feeling of happiness from the gratification of our desires, it is quite easy for us to correlate happiness with wanting more things and then satisfying those desires. But we will never find true and lasting joy outside of us, for joy is already within us. And all that is necessary for us to experience it, is a choice–to seek it, to cultivate it, to embrace it, and then to share it with those around us. Continue reading

Act On Your Wish!

“My life changed the day I moved beyond just wishing for things and I started earning them. That is the day I learned that we do not get what we wish for, we get what we work for.” ~ Steve Maraboli …

Sometimes we take wishing for things in life to a whole new level–we stop putting in the time and effort necessary for us to earn things and to make things happen, and instead simply carry with us baseless expectations that will never produce anything substantial in our lives. If we truly want things to be different, then we have to accept the fact that life requires us to use our energy and abilities to change our environment and behaviors. If we do not–if we continue to do the same things over and over–we will not change at all, and we will never obtain those things we are wishing for. Continue reading
