Continuously Develop Yourself

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

What lies within me? I sometimes feel that my worth is directly correlated to the things I have accomplished, the things I have done in life that others tend to define me by. However, this is simply not true. As Ralph tells us here, the potential within each of us dwarfs everything that we have done so far, and everything that we are going to undertake. It is therefore of the utmost importance that I understand “what lies within me”–as well as spend time developing myself and my abilities–if I wish to find happiness and success in life. Know Yourself!

“Know thyself and all will be revealed.” – Pamela Theresa Loertscher

When I watch a magician or an illusionist perform, I constantly wonder how each trick or act is accomplished. My mind begins to surmise my own thoughts on the mastery of their craft. Here, of course, Pamela does not mean that we can have the answers to all the questions on Earth. Instead, she is illustrating just how we can prepare ourselves to go in search of the answers we seek. Continue reading

Look For The Positive In Every Obstacle You Encounter

“When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.” – Charles A. Beard

When I wish to go stargazing, I find a place that is dark enough, a place with little to no light pollution or cloud coverage. And as Charles is hinting towards here, our lives are very much the same: if I wish to become something greater than who I am now, I have to search for the stars even in the darkest of nights. Through the obstacles I face and the difficulties I encounter, how I see things determines more of my happiness, or lack thereof, than I might ever imagine. The question, then, is do I look for the stars? Continue reading

We Are Blessed To Be A Blessing!

“We are healed to help others. We are blessed to be a blessing. We are saved to serve, not to sit around and wait for heaven.” – Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life

At some point in our lives, the majority of us need healing. As a teenager, I know that I was in no position to be of much help to others, for I had many issues of my own, and very little perspective. But in looking back over the years of my life, I realize that I am in a much better position now to serve others who are in need–I am in a place where I am able to offer my help to those in need of healing, to be a blessing for those who need blessed. I can make a difference in the life of others who need it today. Continue reading

Practice Discernment When Helping Others

“People who won’t help others in trouble “because they got into trouble through their own fault” would probably not throw a lifeline to a drowning person until they learned whether that person fell in through his or her own fault or not.” – Sydney J. Harris

Numerous times throughout my life I have gotten myself into trouble, through my own faults and mistakes, and believe me, some help would have been appreciated during those times. However, I also am aware that it is important to learn how to deal with adversity on our own, without having someone bail us out whenever we get into trouble. Therein lies the dilemma–how do we decide when our help is necessary or when it is damaging? Are we going to let someone else make a mess of their life, and lose their faith in people, or are we going to become enablers by pulling them out of their own mess? Continue reading

What Makes You Happy Changes With Time

“Happiness is neither virtue nor pleasure nor this thing nor that, but simply growth. We are happy when we are growing.” – William Butler Yeats

Perhaps I feel good today and hope to keep that feeling for a while. That would be desireable, however, the truth is that all things change–days change, situations change, people change, moods change. Life can get really frustrating when I try to keep things the same. Much of what made me happy several years ago no longer does–and chances are, the things that will bring me happiness tomorrow, are not the same things that made me happy today. Continue reading

The “Good” You Didn’t Do!

“Every man is guilty of all the good he didn’t do.” – Voltaire

Doing good in life is a conscious choice that each of us make on our own terms. For this fact, we can be guilty of not doing good–and for much of our lives, we have never really thought about it this way. Instead, we felt doing good as simply being charitable, as being the type of person who has a lot and wishes to give some of that to others. But here, Voltaire tells us quite simply that it is a duty that we are held accountable for. Continue reading
