Self-Discovery

“Josh Billings said, “It is not only the most difficult thing to know oneself, but the most inconvenient one, too.” Human beings have always employed an enormous variety of clever devices for running away from themselves, and the modern world is particularly rich in such stratagems.” ~ John W. Gardner, Self-Renewal …

Today’s society tends to rob us of our happiness, purpose, and meaning in life. Everywhere we turn we are bombarded with advertisements and messages that tell us we need to spend more to find happiness; that we need to ceaselessly pursue contentment and pleasure through worldly things that are outside of ourselves. But when we resist seeking within ourselves–knowing ourselves and becoming intimate with our heart and mind–we become strangers to ourselves. Continue reading

Surround Yourself By Those Who Bring Out The Best In You

“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay? Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” ~ Jim Rohn …

Because “our lives do not get better by chance, they get better by change,” it is important that we truly understand that we are the sculptors of our lives–we determine who we are, how we see ourselves, and how others see us. And to do that, we must be painfully aware of who we surround ourselves with and what we allow into our hearts and minds. This is a prerequisite to personal growth and fulfillment and it is the only path that can lead us to a meaningful and purpose-driven life. Continue reading

Knowing What You Will Not Stand For

“It’s important that people should know what you stand for. It’s equally important that they know what you won’t stand for.” ~ Mary Hull Waldrip …

It is fairly easy for me to let others know the things that I stand for. Perhaps this is because many of the things that are acceptable to me are also acceptable to those in my life. The things I find unacceptable, however, tend to be things that do not necessarily always line up with the beliefs and values of others. And for this reason, I must be certain to share my standards with those in my life so that they do not step on them. Continue reading

Are You Weighed Down With What Others Are Thinking About You?

“You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do.” ~ David Foster Wallace …

This is helpful advice for all of us to take to heart, for as much as we all would like to claim that we are not in the least bit concerned about what others think about us, we all do to some extent, and it is an utter waste of our potential. We know in our hearts and minds that what others think or say really does not hold any weight for all practical purposes, and will only impact us in so much as we allow it to, yet we are still inclined to overlook these feelings–perhaps out of fear, or because as humans we crave acceptance and approval. Spend Your “Energy” Wisely

“People spend too much time finding other people to blame, too much energy finding excuses for not being what they are capable of being, and not enough energy putting themselves on the line, growing out of the past, and getting on with their lives.” ~ Joseph Michael Straczynski …

Where are our time and energy spent? We all have the same amount of them available to us each day–the same limitless possibilities and potential to make what we want to of our lives. We can use it in wasteful or selfish ways blaming others, making up excuses, hiding behind fear, or carelessly letting our days slip between our fingers–but we do so at our own peril; for acting in such ways puts our happiness and fulfillment in life at great risk.

It Is Possible To Strengthen Or Diminish The Life Around You In Almost Any Role

“I would be true, for there are those who trust me; I would be pure, for there are those who care; I would be strong, for there is much to suffer; I would be brave, for there is much to dare.” ~ Howard Arnold Walter, excerpt from My Creed, published in Harper’s Magazine (May 1907)….

Shortly after graduating Princeton and spending a year in the seminary, Howard headed to Japan to teach English. It was during this time in which he wrote this creed in a poem to his mother for Christmas. His words speak so eloquently of the bonds we each share with one another, and the connections we make with one another each day of our lives. And true to the spirit of his heart poured forth in this creed, he spent the remainder of his life in selfless service toward others. Continue reading

If You Do Not Stand For Yourself, You Will Fall For Everyone

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” ~ Harvey Forbes Fierstein….

Standing up for ourselves and for our beliefs is not always easy–many individuals have great difficulty doing so even when the consequences of not doing so directly affect them in very negative ways. But we are defined by our actions. And when we let others determine our actions by paying attention to what they say, or choose inaction out of fear or embarrassment–even if unintentional or involuntary–we diminish our lives and our purpose. Continue reading
