You Are Here

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.” ~ Woodrow Wilson …

In our search for purpose and fulfillment in life, it is quite easy to get caught in the rut of merely trying to make a living for ourselves. We have goals, dreams, wants, desires, responsibilities, and on and on, that require us to place some of our focus on attaining and achieving these things. But this is not our sole purpose in life, and it is incredibly important that we recognize the value in contributing to the lives of those around us.

Our Life Is Up To Us

“Life, like any other exciting story, is bound to have painful and scary parts, boring and depressing parts, but it is a brilliant story, and it is up to us how it will turn out in the end.” ~ Bo Lozoff …

I like how Bo looks at life as an exciting story, filled with joy and happiness, pain and sorrow, suspense and thrills, lulls and boredom. Of course, it is great to experience the good times and fully soak them up. Yet in our times of trouble, when we are faced with difficulties and sorrows, it is easy for us to become overwhelmed and to feel hopeless, as if this is what all of our experiences in life will be. Yet this is never true… for at any given point in our life, we have the ability to say, “This is not how my story will end.” Continue reading

We Get What We Give!

“No one goes their way alone. All that we send into the lives of others comes back into our own.” ~ Edwin Markham …

At times, we can feel alone in life… we are not; this is perhaps the biggest deception of society today. Everything we do has an effect on those around us, whether positive or negative. And because we have the ability to touch the lives of others, we have a duty as fellow humans to do so in a way that positively affects those lives, for their benefit as well as for ours… for as the band New Radicals sings, “we only get what we give.” Continue reading

Seeing Imperfect Person Perfectly

“We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” ~ Sam Keen …

The problem in searching for a perfect person to love, is that no one is perfect… we will never find such a person. And along those very same lines, when we fall in love with the perfections of an individual, we set ourselves up for disappointment, because eventually we will be faced with their imperfections as well. That is the thing with authentic love–it is blind… it does not see one’s imperfections, but instead sees an “imperfect person perfectly.” Continue reading

Rust Of Life

“Anxiety is the rust of life, destroying its brightness and weakening its power. A childlike and abiding trust in Providence is its best preventive and remedy.” ~ Tyron Edwards …

Anxiety is “the rust of life;” after all, it feeds on us, corroding and destroying our faith and certainty and obscuring the beauty we perceive in life. Unfortunately, anxiety is something that generally seems to plague us no matter how much we try to avoid it or prevent it. Perhaps that is because it is so deeply rooted in our emotions–fear, uncertainty, apprehension, failure, and so on. Or maybe it is a result of trying to manage it in unhealthy and ineffective ways. Regardless, the best way to handle it–and thwart it–is through complete trust and faith in our Creator. This requires complete surrender of our worries–it means evicting anxiety so that peace may come inside. Continue reading

Often Confused Word…

“Love is not something you look for… love is something you become!” ~ Alina Villasante …

Love can be a confusing thing. As a child, many of us were taught that love is something we must look for, something we must seek from without. But that is not love. Love comes from within us; it is something we create. Love is something that no one can take away from us once we have it, at least without our permission.

Feed Your Soul

“God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other way.” ~ C.S. Lewis …

It is interesting to imagine our spirits requiring fuel to run properly. We are all aware of the necessity to consume food in order for our bodies to have the nutrition and calories to sustain itself; and the need for petrol for our automobiles in order for them to function properly. Yet how often do we feed our souls? And when we do, what exactly are we feeding them? Continue reading
