“Do not be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.” ~ Richard Bach …
Nothing temporal lasts forever in this life. As time continues onward, we will have to say goodbye to more and more people, places, and things–loved ones who pass away, friendships that drift apart, jobs and colleagues that we must move on from, experiences that we have outgrown, recreational activities in which we can no longer physically participate in. The thing about goodbyes, though, is that they do not have to leave us dismayed; a goodbye is not a loss, rather, it is a celebration of the opportunity that was gained to experience life a little deeper.
Even in the day-to-day, week-to-week interactions we have with our friends, we have little goodbyes in which we part company for a brief time. Yet that is the beauty of friendship–it never truly ends. And when we say goodbye to anyone or anything we have a fondness for in our hearts, we are merely saying farewell for now; for as eternal beings who have formed a bond with one another in life, we will never truly part.
Your life is full of riches and promises that will continue to exist even after you say farewell to friends or move on to new chapters in your life. That is because the onus is on each of us, individually, to make our lives richer or poorer.
Make your goodbyes joyous and happy farewells, and realize that they are not forever. Each ending is also a new beginning–with new people, places, things, and stories–that will lead you to many rich experiences that would probably not have occurred had you not been open to continuing on your journey through life.
Look for and embrace the eternal aspects of your friendships.
Questions to consider:
Why do we tend to see goodbyes as terminal?
In what ways do our relationships continue on in our hearts even after farewell?
How nice are reunions? Would such a wonderful thing be possible without goodbyes?
