“Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings …
What am I to do with the time I have been given? This truly is the only question we should ask ourselves… the only question that truly matters. Wishing for things to be different will not change the fact that this life will spiral onward. Yet here we are. We have been given this moment in time… now what are we going to do with it?
We may wish to be somewhere else, but we are not. We may wish to have other things, but we do not. We may wish for different circumstances, but guess what… there will not be any at this moment. If we choose for it to be so in the future, that is a possibility, but right now, we have only this moment, these things, and these circumstances available to us. Am I going to waste my time in unhappiness, pining after the things I do not have but wish I did… or am I going to embrace the potentiality that is right now?
We are responsible for our own happiness in life. We choose the attitudes we bring forth each second of the day. We choose the way in which we are to perceive all our experiences throughout the day. We choose to make our lives easier–for ourselves and for those we love–or we choose to increase the negativity within our world and our circles of influence. It is truly up to us.
Decide what to do with the time you have been given throughout the day.
Questions to consider:
How often do you find yourself wishing for different circumstances or other things?
Does doing so tend to make your life easier or more difficult?
Do you ever try to influence things outside of your control? In what ways? What are the results?
For further thought:
“We’re all doing time. As soon as we get born, we find ourselves assigned to one little body, one set of desires and fears, one family, city, state, country, and planet. Who can ever understand exactly why or how it comes down as it does? The bottom line is, here we are. Whatever, wherever we are, this is what we’ve got. It’s up to us whether we do it as easy time or hard time.” ~Bo Lozoff
