“Dwelling on the negative simply contributes to its power.” ~Shirley MacLaine….
It is easy for us to find goodness and happiness in the midst of the good in the world, and there certainly is a vast wealth of it if we were to take notice. At the same time, I could also make a long list of the bad things that have happened in my life–things that have come and gone but still remain fresh in my mind. Unfortunately, it seems that the human conscience has a knack for dwelling on the negative things. But when we dwell on the negative things–especially things from our past that we should have learned and grown from and then let go of–we contribute to the power negativity holds over us.
Things that have happened in my past are things I do not have to dwell on anymore. It is not repressing memories, it is choosing to focus on the positive rather than the negative in life. Our mind, body, and spirit are all affected by the energy we surround ourselves with, so if I want to fill my life with positive energy, I have only to focus on the positive–the things that truly matter in life.
Do not allow your thoughts to bring you down. The bad things from your past have already had their chance to hurt you. Now is your chance to learn and to grow. Let the past rest in the past and instead concern yourself with what is right here, right now.
Whenever you find yourself shifting to negative thoughts, think about something positive instead.
Questions to consider:
Why we tend to focus on so many negative things in our lives?
What might we do to help ourselves let go of some things that we need to let go of?
What kinds of things from your past do you hold on to?
